A Long Time Ago
It was 1991, and the technology landscape looked a whole lot different than it does in 2011.
Challenge: Create a 1,500 User Network
A 60-year-old insurance company needed to migrate
its 300-location agency force from a terminal-based Unix enviroment to
a client-server network. The challenge was to accomplish this without user
intervention or disruption of ongoing business activity. This upgraded
infrastructure also created the opportunity to provide an expanded suite
of insurance and productivity products to all users. To design, implement
and manage the project, they turned to long-time business partner Quest
Technology Group.
Each site had its own Unix server with all day-to-day operations being
handled remotely. There were no onsite system administrators or technical
resources.
Quest realized that the key
to this project was a well-constructed system architecture and software
support
library
that would sustain day-to-day business activities well after the rollout.
This rollout became a logistic project that was supported by a team of
vendors each experienced in a specific are of the project.
An installation checklist was developed by Quest. This became the roadmap for
the consistent configuration of each component on the network. What began as
5 pages quickly grew to more than 40 pages as new software products were added
and hardware components expanded. Quest's objective was to create a step-by-step
model that could be easily followed by non-technical installers. This premise
was constantly validated as the project progressed. So successful was the checklist,
that it is still the mode used today.
Quest created a fully-automated installation of SCO Open Server. The entire network
and system interfaces were configured without user intervention. An Expect script
was created to configure each router, ensuring consistent and reliable WAN connectivity
across 300 sites and the home office.
To manage the client-side software distribution, Quest developed QClient™ This
Windows application provided an update and control mechanism for software
distribution, version control and client configuration changes. Everything from
installing software directly on the client to managing Windows registry updates
was easily supported. Again, no user intervention was required.

forward 2 decades --
Our client continues to use the solution that Quest Technology Group successfully
created for them. Since the initial rollout in 1998, additional users have been
added, laptops have been introduced and the software platform expanded significantly
to include new Windows products and Web applications served by these local Unix
servers. With all of these changes, the core Unix application continues to perform
at 99.9% reliability.
It's Not Always Technology
Sometimes --- many times, actually --- the real things that plague us have nothing to do with technology. We had an opportunity to discover exactly that situation recently.
A well-estatblished organization found itself the victim of both declining revenues and no operational plan at all. Not even a hint of a plan. It had simply been business as usual for many years until there was suddenly no money.
The first thing Quest did was get the right people around the table. A strong team with legal, financial, technology, operations and administrative expertise immediately formed the turnaround committee.
Next, the issues were prioritized. Since lack of cash on hand was critical, we addressed how to meet immediate obligations. As we began reviewing the financials, we found much deeper problems. The process of completely recreating the financials over the next 4 months was undertaken.
Meanwhile, the day-to-day procedures were reviewed. As so typically happens, "we've always done it that way" was the only guideline that existed. What followed over the next 6 months was a clarification of roles, the creation of policies and procedures and the implementation of good financial responsibilty guidelines.
The organization at large was actively engaged in both the problems and the solutions in progress. As a result of this communication, this turnaround became a true team achievement.
The Results
Nine months later the organization was cash-positive. Long-outstanding debts had been repaid. The financials were understandable, and the budget was based on actual numbers. The corporate structure had seen a rewrite of its bylaws that served as a solid roadmap for the future.
This organization emerged as a well-grounded company with leadership solidly invested in
its future.
Planning a Change
What happens when you think it's time to move to a new technology? Everything you hear from others in your industry, what you read from the vendor, all sound like the best decision. But sometimes there's more involved in making a change than meets the eye.
Recently, a CPA firm client began to explore moving from an in-house server application to a software as a service (SaaS) solution. Before making the final commitment, Quest met with everyone who had something to say about the decision.

A Long Time Ago
It was 1991, and the technology landscape looked a whole lot different than it does in 2011.
Challenge: Bring Web Technologies and Corporate Data Together
Quest Technology Group began
the project by working with our client to define the report criteria that
would return the most
immediate benefit to the agents. Since this server environment had proven
tremendously cost-effective in terms of application distribution and management
over the years, Quest introduced a web application architecture for this
project. This eliminated the need for any distributed applications, and
the maintenance burden associated with them.
Web pages were designed by Quest with easy-to-follow steps for report selection.
The majority of the 1,500+ users had little or no experience with Web applications
so ease of use was essential. The reports were generated by Unix query scripts
invoked by CGI scripts, eliminating the need for any client investment in
new software. Throughout the 20-year life of the agency applications, Quest
had developed not only a complete data access layer to C-ISAM but also many
database utility programs. These tools enabled Quest to easily extract the
data based on specific user criteria just as if this were a true relational
database.
To enable these web applications, Quest developed a completely unattended
installation of the Netscape FastTrack Server that is packaged with SCO Open
Server. Since there were no system administrators at any agency, all Unix
and Windows administration tasks were always accomplished through unattended
programs.The result was Agency Place Reports™, a component of Agency Place™.
Here agency and home office users throughout the organization gained access
to point-in-time data that enabled them to evaluate, manage and develop profitable
books of business.

Obviously, what we did 20 years ago sounds more than a little dated today. But in the context of the time, it was a fairly disruptive approach to getting and using essential data.
The point of sharing this story is to

iPads, 2x and a VB Application
The Challenge
This was a company of mobile workers trying to operate in a sit-at-your-desk environment. It was a farily typical setting with a Windows server, PC clients and a 10-year-old VB application. This VB app was the heart of the company managing inventory as well as sales.
What was needed was the ability to fully access this critical inventory and sales data while out of the office.
In addition, valuable time was lost because troubleshooting could often not be completed offsite. This meant bringing equipment back in house for analysis, repair and redelivery to the customer. Wouldn't it be so much more efficient if we could use Facetime to communicate and resolve problems realtime?
The Solution
2x Application Server opened the door to remote access of the inventory application. With the 2x client installed on new iPads, remote workers now have full functionality wherever they are. A simple print app enables printing to wireless printers as well as in-the-office printers.
In addition, communication through Facetime provides immediate problem solving in a fraction of the time.

Does this really mean unlimited mailbox size?
Yes, it really is unlimited. Based on an analysis done by AppRiver, email storage capacity increase about 40% per year. With decreased demands for storage and increased capacity, offering unlimited mailboxes just makes sense. In additiion, about 80% of all mail is junk. When all of this is filtered out before delivery to you, the actual amount of mail in your mailbox decreases considerably.
What are the benefits of unlimited mailbox size?
Traditionally, administrators have had to spend time managing and enforcing quotes. Users have been forced to delete stored mails to meet storage quotes. We believe it makes more sense to use mail as a real business tool without time spent managing an arbitrary quote.
Does this mean that mailbox size doesn't matter?
Not entirely. Exchange and Outlook both impose size limits that still have to be considered. These are built into the applications to provide efficient performance.

Do my customers need to purchase encryption from Quest Technology Group to receive encrypted mail from me?
No, your customers will use the Zero Download Messenger (ZDM) or they can download the read-only Outlook plugin.
If we use the Web portal to send and reply to encrypted messages, how do we get a copy of those messages for archiving?
With the ZDM there is a "copy me" option on emails that allows you to save a copy to your server.
Will email be automatically encryped or must we manually encrypt it??
While email isn't automatically encrypted, you just click the "Send Secure" button in Outlook to create an encrypted message.
If the recipient forwards an encrypted message, will it remain encrypted?
Yes, once an email has been encrypted, the entire thread will continue to be encrypted. Is there a way to send all emails encrypted to certain recipients?
No, not at this time.
